Kisetsu - Rain and Dew by Hanami-Mai Kisetsu - Rain and Dew by Hanami-Mai
"(...) O cuidadoso ritual de transformar o rosto em porcelana viva, moldar os cabelos num arranjo exótico e envolver-se em camadas harmoniosas de seda pareceu a Ame, naquela noite, um processo incomodamente rápido. Olhar-se no espelho, por fim, e soterrar o semblante amargo com um sorriso doce de boneca teria sido difícil se a jovem não estivesse tão habituada a fazê-lo. (...)"
Kisetsu - Primavera, Cap.6

"(...) The careful ritual of turning her face into living porcelain, shaping her hair in an exotic swirl and wrapping herself in harmonious layers of silk seemed to Ame, that night, like an uncomfortably fast process. Gazing at the mirror and burying a bitter countenance under a sweet doll-like smile would have been difficult if the young woman wasn't so used to doing so. (...)
Kisetsu - Spring, Chpt.6

Illustration for my novel, Kisetsu, set in XVth century Japan. It features Ametsuyu, a high-ranking courtesan from Akahana, and one of the main characters of the story. Ametsuyu, meaning "rain and dew" is her stage name, more flourished than a regular name would usually be. Stage names like so were common among artists and courtesans in ancient Japan. Most people, though, just call her "Ame".

Ajisai
(hydrangea) was chosen to portray her, for being a summer flower related to the summer rainy season. It's also a flower which blooms in different colors, from pink to blue hues, depending on the soil conditions. This dual nature is symbolic to Ametsuyu's divided feelings regarding... well, I'll give you no spoilers! wink :P

Kanji reads "Akahana no Ametsuyu".

For the historical period the novel is set in, her look is simpler than 18th century courtesans (tayuu and oiran) but I do find Muromachi/Sengoku period kosode with narrow obi quite charming. Her face is painted with seashell-based pigments (gofun) and her garment features summer motifs - waves, waterstreams, dew on grass - and the mon (crest) of the teahouse were she works. The colors of her garment are fuji-iro (wisteria), hitoshiosome ("single-dip dye", a soft shade of blue-green), gyuugetsukou (ox-blood red) and ikkonzome soft pink.

On a last historical note (for those who find these details interesting like me, lol) - complex high buns were common hairstyles for all japanese women in later periods (like the 17th and 18th century on), but in Muromachi period (when Kisetsu is set), showing the back of the neck was considered too sensual for noble ladies, who only wore their hair down - or in a ponytail. "Provocative" high buns were worn mostly by courtesans, inspired by chinese hairstyles.

Muito obrigada! :aww:

It's sooo pretty with ethe soft colours and everything! ^_^
Also thanks for the info, I didn't know that in Muromachi the hair was mostly wore down. o.o
Anyway, I like how you designed her hair, it's really neat and characteristic but not over-the top. =)

And you're very wellcome!
Thanks! Nihongami is quite hard to draw (even the simple styles like this) and I really wanted something recognizable for a character, yet historically accurate. I'm glad to hear it looks nice!

This is fantastic! :D She looks so pretty, but the courtesan life does not sound easy in the slightest... With another character's portrait, I'm really looking forward to the novel's release in English. :)

She does have a difficult life, and goes through many hardships... but there are some events and people that help her have courage.
The translation is ongoing... Thank you, as always, for your kind support! ^^

You're welcome! And I know it'll take time for the translation. That's no easy task. I'm still excited for it Santa :la:Until it is completed, I'll just enjoy rereading and looking at the pictures you've put up.

Oh, how interesting. I knew about the sensuality of the neck in Japanese culture, but not about this historical detail. I always assumed that high class ladies continued to wear their hair in Heian-style due to tradition and in order to emulate court dress and adopted the high buns in 18th century due to their raging popularity (since fashion seeped slowly but surely even to the imperial court).

I guess it was mainly for the tradition aspect like you point out, indeed...
But still, I guess the neck sensuality was probably another factor.
